Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are prosthetic dental devices that replace missing or badly broken or decayed teeth. The crown replaces the top part of the tooth; it can only be used if enough root is present to attach it to. A dental bridge fits over the top of the gum and may include one or more prosthetic teeth. Dental bridges may be attached permanently to the surrounding teeth or may be removable. A crown is permanent.

Why Do I Need a Crown or Bridge?

Missing teeth can create several dental problems. The open socket is likely to collect food debris and is hard to clean, which increases the risk of tooth decay as well as gum disease. Broken or badly decayed teeth may cause injuries to the tongue or gums and may cause an abscess. Other teeth shift into the opening when a tooth is lost, which can affect alignment and bite, causing discomfort. Of course, crowns and bridges also improve the appearance of the smile as well.

What’s the Procedure for a Dental Crown?

Having a tooth filled and getting a dental crown are similar procures. After administering a local anesthetic, the dentist makes a mold of the tooth to serve as a model for the crown. The decayed or damaged area is drilled out, and a temporary crown is placed while the permanent crown is made at a dental lab. At the second appointment, the permanent crown is tried for fit, and cemented in place; it may be shaped if necessary.

What’s the Procedure for a Dental Bridge?

Unlike a crown, a bridge is often meant to span an area with several missing teeth. A bridge is a plastic or metal base with prosthetic teeth made of a resin composite or porcelain (ceramic). If the bridge is the fixed style, it will be cemented into place by attaching it to the remaining natural teeth. A removable bridge has special fittings to hold it in place. Two visits are necessary; one to make molds for the bridge, and one to fit, adjust and attach the implement.
