Dentures Q & A

Why Would I Need Dentures?

Dentures are most likely to become necessary when all or most of the teeth are badly decayed, or the patient has severe gum disease. Occasionally, restorative dental treatments are simply too expensive compared to dentures. If the problem is limited to one or a few teeth, an implant or bridge might be a better choice. Each case must be decided on an individual basis after consultation with the dentist.

Will Dentures Make Me Look Better?

Not having teeth is certainly a cosmetic issue, and dentures can make a difference. In addition, the loss of all the teeth makes the facial muscles sag. Although some loss of muscle tone is a normal part of aging, losing the teeth makes it much more pronounced. Dentures help fill out the face for a more natural look. Dentures can also be made in a lighter shade than the normal teeth, for the same effect as tooth whitening.

What Are the Different Kinds of Dentures?

Dentures can be conventional, immediate or overdentures. Conventional dentures are the classic, fully removable dentures. These dentures are not placed until several months after the teeth are removed, as the surgical site must heal. However, they are less likely to need adjustments. Immediate dentures are placed in the mouth right after the surgery; they may need to be modified after the healing process is complete. In other respects, conventional and immediate dentures are basically the same. An overdenture is a partial denture that fits over a few remaining teeth.

How Do I Care for Dentures?

Dentures need daily cleaning with a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove food and debris. They should be placed in a water-filled container if left out of the mouth for more than a few minutes. In other respects, oral hygiene still matters, even for people with dentures, comprising a daily brushing of gums, tongue and roof of the mouth to remove bacteria or food particles. Regular dental checkups are also important.
